by self-annointed “liberals”
and “libertarians” who turn the text
inside out to defend the absolute evil
of laissez-faire capitalism.

Proclaim a doctrine
of rapacious non-empathy if you must
but stop using great texts
as smoke screens

before  writing about the wealth of nations, Smith, like his mentor, Francis Hutcheson,  wrote a considerable tome on Moral Sentiments. Americans would do well to read it.
