Updating Emerson

The rude bridge, indeed
These days we drone them
And anything else
That stands in the way
of our greed.
It’s our bullshit justifications
Now heard round the world –
Whosoever dare oppose, pay heed
Pay heed and through the nose
And heaven help those who
Complain when they bleed
Or so much as understand why
Once-great America has foes

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world
Concord Hymn – R.W. Emerson
