The End of Legend

The end of legend isn’t the end of mystery…
and besides, lies make life one long agony
in the face of death.

No man’s life hath meaning
’til he give it one…

So dust off your knees and take on the job
you have tried so long to give away.

The time has come to grow up
into children
and forget about sweating under
grown-up masks
walking around pretending to be adults.

I do not know what comes next
[if anything ]
and neither do you.

I only mind your wonderings outloud
when you try to lay them down
as law.

And if you cannot do
without temples and such
what I would like very much
is a holy place that forbids
taking up collections
among the poor.
