What distance merely lends

From the cliff, looking down
above the seaside town
weekend cars in lanes
are corpuscles in veins
blue and black mostly
with breaks of red or white
a view as charming as daisies
in the dunes, utterly uplifting
as gulls in flight – but we all know
that below, death lurks in the gutters
common as cigarette butts
